Pellston Education Foundation Distributes $9,000 in Scholarships
At the annual awards night, Pellston Education Foundation (PEF) distributed $9,000 in scholarships to Pellston seniors. There were seven scholarships administered to seven students. The foundation now manages scholarships that were distributed by the Pellston School Board including the John D. McLarty Family Scholarship, Andrew and Barbara Mroz Scholarship, and Edward and Mary Cadwell Scholarship. A full list of recipients is below.
“It made operational sense for the Board to hand over administration of [those] scholarships to the newly formed Pellston Education Foundation,” said Stephen Seelye, Pellston Superintendent and PEF Board of Trustee.
The foundation debuted it’s first scholarship of $2,500 to two students. The Pellston Education Foundation Scholarship is reserved for exemplary, well-rounded graduates in the senior class at Pellston High demonstrating essay and interviewing skills.
“The students were so impressive to get their packets submitted on time, which included a letter of recommendation and essay for many of the scholarships. A few have interviews included and we make sure to ask the kids a variety of questions. We also try to not make it too intimidating by keeping the panel of interviewers low in number,” stated Tom Litzner, PEF Board of Trustees and scholarship committee chair.
“We’ve got one year on the books so this whole process should be pretty streamlined now,” Litzner continued. “We have a great relationship with the school councilor and other staff. We try to make it as efficient for everyone as possible.”
Scholarship applications and information will be available with the high school councilor Jen Dilworth by late February 2023.
